4 Kenyan Journalists Who Ditched Sports Careers

Journalism in Kenya has witnessed rapid growth, particularly in the past decade. 

The hefty salary and influence associated with journalism have made many people ditch their careers and try their luck in the noble profession.

TeamKenya.co.ke looks at four Kenyans who quit their promising sports career and ventured into journalism.

Ghost Mulee

Jacob “Ghost” Mulee is a prominent journalist who started as a sports personality but later switched to journalism.

The Radio Jambo presenter also served as a coach at both club and international levels. 

One of his biggest successes as a coach is guiding Harambee Stars to the 2004 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mulee, who began his career as a goalkeeper, played for several domestic clubs including Tusker FC and Reunion.

Fred Arocho

In a recent interview, popular sports journalist Fred Arocho explained how he landed his job at the Radio Africa Group.

The vocal sports presenter used to play for Kenya Premier League side KCB. 

He was part of the squad that helped KCB gain promotion to the Kenya Premier League (KPL) in 1997. 

Charles Nyende

Charles Nyende abandoned a promising rugby career and tried his luck in the sports journalism profession.

Nyende, who has previously featured for the national rugby 15s side, Kenya Simbas, quit playing in the early 2000s due to injury-related reasons.

The former Mwamba RFC fullback started writing sports articles in 2003 and he has grown into one of the best journalists in the country.

Nyende holds a Masters of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Nairobi and currently works as a sub-editor at the Nation Media Group 

Mukami Wambora

Mukami Wambora, the daughter of former Embu governor Martin Wambora, is one of the most famous female sports journalists in Kenya.

Before Mukami started her journalism profession at Bamba Sports in 2016, she used to play football.

The popular news anchor, who not long ago parted ways with Citizen TV,  featured for a number of top sides including the University of Liverpool. She also took part in the Kenyan Amateur League.
