Schools Top Kenyan Sports Journalists Attended

Sports journalism is one of the fast growing sectors in the media industry particularly due to the appetite that Kenyans have for track and field events.

Over the years, Kenyan radio and television personalities have become household names due to sports journalism.

However, despite the popularity that they have amassed, very few individuals are aware of the learning institutions that molded them into the persons they are today.

TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at the schools that some of the sports journalists in Kenya attended. 

Fred Arocho

Fred Arocho who is part of the Weekend Warm Up show that airs on Radio Jambo every Saturday morning was brought up in Nairobi alongside his twin brother Bill Arocho.

He attended Eastleigh-based Einsworth Primary School before proceeding to Pumwani High School for his secondary school education.

Arocho fell in love with the beautiful game at the tender age of 7. While at High school he was among the top defenders for Pumwani.

After completing his post-primary education he played for a number of sides including Sony Sugar, and NSSF FC.

The father of four would later hang his boots and venture into the media industry, landing a job at Radio Africa where he has grown into one of the best football commentators in the country. He also appears on other channels, including KTN News and Citizen TV as a panelist.

Bernard Ndong

Ndong who recently ditched Citizen TV for NTV started his education at Nairobi’s St. Nicholas Primary School before proceeding to Lenana School.

After completing his post-primary education, the host of the Sport-On show joined Daystar University where he studied a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism.

He then enrolled at Hekima College to pursue a Masters degree.

Stephen Mukangai

Radio Maisha Sports presenter Stephen Mukangai schooled at Kakamega-based Ingotse High School in Navakholo.

Before venturing into the sports journalism industry, Mukangai used to do casual jobs including construction (Mjengo) in Kibera informal settlement.

Mukami Wambora

Mukami, who is one of the most popular female sports journalists in Kenya, studied at the Rusinga Group of Schools.

She then proceeded to the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom 

Mukami, who is a trained lawyer, used to play football while at school. He was a lethal striker for the University of Liverpool and even played for a number of local sides before focusing her attention on sports journalism.

Some of the high profile sporting events that the Citizen TV news anchor has covered include the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia, 2019 Ineos Challenge and the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
