Ababu Namwamba, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, announced on Saturday, December 10, 2022, that the government would give discounts to sponsors that invested in the sports industry.
Speaking in Eldoret after flagging off the Mini East African Classic Safari Rally, the Sports CS affirmed that the objective of the move is to encourage firms to invest in the sports sector.
He added that the move is also part of the plan to rehabilitate the sports industry in the country.

“One of the things we want to do is to make it easy for sponsors who support these sporting events.
“I have just activated an old provision in the income tax act of giving tax clawbacks to those sponsors who put their money in sports,” he was quoted by Citizen Digital.
According to the CS, the taxation rates introduced by the previous administration led many firms to shy away from sponsoring local clubs and national teams.
One of the leading betting firms in East Africa was forced out of the Kenyan market, making them look for greener pastures in the neighboring countries.
The move negatively impacted the sports sector in the country, with some of the clubs failing to pay players salaries.
Namwamba also revealed plans of making the motorsport industry more affordable for those who were interested in the discipline.
“I really want to engage stakeholders in the motorsport industry, especially the leadership, to see how we can facilitate motorsport enthusiasts who don’t have the resources to invest in this very expensive sport, to nonetheless pursue their passion,” he ended.
Bharij Raaj, Piers Daykin and veteran driver Ian Duncan excelled during the first day of the rally.
At the end of the first day, Raaj was leading the pack with Daykin and Duncan registering second and third-place positions.
