3 Biggests Stadiums in East Africa

Although none of the East African nations has ever made it to the FIFA World Cup, the region boasts of state-of-the-art stadiums.

From Kasarani in Kenya to Kampala-based Nelson Mandela Stadium, TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at the top three biggest stadiums in East Africa.

Kasarani Stadium

A 60,000-capacity Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani is one of the biggest stadiums in the East African region.

The stadium which is located alongside the famous Thika Road was opened in 1987 by the late President Daniel Torotich Arap Moi.

The multipurpose stadium has a swimming pool, a running track, and a pitch used for rugby and football matches. 

Benjamin Mkapa Stadium

The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium or the Tanzania National Main Stadium also has a capacity of 60,000.

The facility which was opened in 2007 was constructed at an estimated cost of $56 million (Ksh 6,900,000,000) by the Beijing Construction Engineering Group.

Benjamin Mkapa Stadium hosts Tanzanian top-flight league matches as well as international matches.

The state-of-the-art stadium which is located in Dar es Salaam boasts of an extended roof, a car park with a capacity of 600 vehicles, and five main entrances. 

Mandela National Stadium

Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium is the third biggest in East Africa.
The stadium which is named after the late South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has a capacity of 45,202.

Mandela National Stadium is used by several local teams including the Uganda Police FC and Uganda Revenue Authority FC.

Formerly known as Namboole National Stadium, the facility was constructed by a Chinese firm for $36,000,000 (approximately Ksh4,400,000,000).
