Beatrice Chepkoech Opens Year With 3rd Place Finish

Kenya's 3,000 steeplechase athlete Beatrice Chepkoech began the new year with a third-place finish at the San Silvestre Vallecana meet in Madrid, Spain.

The 10km race which took place on New Year's Eve, December 31, saw Uganda’s Priscah Chesang finish first in 30:29.

Coming in second was Burundian and two-time World Indoor champion Francine Niyonsabad.

Chepkoech finished at a podium position for the second time in the year having finished third in the senior women's 2km race at the Kenya national trials for the World Cross Country Championship.

In the men’s 10km race, Ugandan and world 10,000m record holder Joshua Cheptegei clinched the top spot in 27:09.

Former Champion Mohammed Katir from Spain came second in 27:19 followed by fellow compatriot Jesus Ramos who finished third in 27:52.

In Italy, Kenya’s Margaret Chelimo also finished third at the Boclasssic after she clocked 15:44.

Ethiopian Seyaum Dawit clocked 15:33 to finish first place and Albanian Gega Luiza came second in 15:41.

In the men's race, Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo toped winning the Boclassic victory for the second time in his career.
