“Haller, 28, was given the diagnosis shortly after signing for Dortmund in July 2022 on the back of a 34-goal campaign with Ajax.

“The Ivorian underwent two surgeries and chemotherapy in the ensuing months, before getting the green light to link back up with his teammates on their return to training on 2 January 2023,” read part of the statement from Bundesliga.

In a video message to Dortmund fans, the former West Ham United attacker stated that the experience was difficult.

"Hello guys, I'm finally back. It wasn't easy, but with your support was easier to do. So I'm just looking forward to seeing you in the stadium for some victories,” he stated.

The mercurial forward is expected to play competitive football in the second half of the 2022/2023 Bundesliga campaign.

He will first undertake conditioning and strength work to regain his fitness before returning to the field.

Sebastian Kehl, Dortmund's sporting director, hailed Haller for his fighting spirit and described his return as positive.

Haller represented France at the youth level before ditching them for Ivory Coast in 2020.
