The battle to qualify for the Champions League in the English Premier League concluded on Sunday, May 23, after a dramatic final day fixture of a season like no other.

Remarkable run-ins from both Chelsea and Liverpool saw them take control of third and fourth place, while Leicester City endured a nightmare sense of deja vu.

Leicester City twice squandered the lead to lose 4-2 to Tottenham at the King Power Stadium on May 23, as their Champions League dream was shattered.

Jamie Vardy converted two penalties to give the Foxes 1-0 and 2-1 leads and, with Chelsea losing at Aston Villa, that would have been enough for Leicester to claim fourth spot.

But a 76th-minute own goal by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel gifted Spurs an equaliser and Gareth Bale, possibly in his last game for Spurs on loan, rubbed salt into the wounds with two well-taken late goals.

Just like last term when a Champions League qualifying spot looked to be theirs for the taking, this season’s FA Cup winners finished in fifth place and will have to content themselves with a Europa League campaign.

The Foxes have been unlucky in their EPL run but have a consolation of the FA title which decorates their trophy cabinet.

Liverpool sealed the third spot after an ugly season run that saw them lose their long winning streak at Anfield and again being eliminated in all major European and English tournaments.

Despite their poor performance in the mid-season, Liverpool managed to put themselves together and pull up to the third position.
