Mashemeji Derby, one of the biggest rivalries in Eastern and Central Africa, is expected to go down on Sunday evening, January 29 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Arch-rivals Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards go into this weekend's derby with confidence having picked up convincing victories in their latest matches.

Since the first encounter between the two clubs in 1968, the fixture has been full of drama, on and off the pitch.

Claims of a corpse in AFC Leopard's changing room 

AFC players once had to change their outfits outside the stadium because they believed Gor Mahia supporters had placed a corpse inside the changing room, hours prior to the kickoff.

Blowing dust to the referee

AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia fans usually blow dust on the match officials before the start of the match.

They believe the action would help counter any black magic the opponent might have prepared. 

Chicken head found on the pitch

In one of the Mashemeji derbies, the centre referee found a chicken head in the middle of the pitch before kickoff. 

The referee had to get rid of it before he could signal the start of the match.

Insane Outfits

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans usually dress to impress during Mashemeji Derbies. Some of them, particularly women dress to kill during the fixture while others don jerseys with vulgar names.

Raila Odinga Arrives at Stadium on a Chopper

During the 2018 edition of the Mashemeji Derby staged at the Afraha Stadium on Tuesday, May 1, opposition leader Raila Odinga’s chopper landed in the middle of the field at half-time much to the amazement of the fans. 

He arrived in the company of the current Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja, and the late Joe Kadenge.

Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) George Aladwa and Kasarani lawmaker Ronald Karauri also accompanied the former Prime Minister. 

Odinga is a die-hard supporter of Gor Mahia and London-based side Arsenal FC.
