The government of Kenya has announced plans to build a museum in Eldoret in honour of the reigning marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
According to the Culture and Heritage Principal Secretary (PS) Ummi Bashir, the facility would be named Museum 1:59.
1:59 is a unique and unforgettable number to many Kenyans because it was during the historic Ineos 1:59 Challenge that Kipchoge became the first human being to run a marathon in under two hours.

“He is a hero to us. He is on our heroes' council board and we want to come up with a museum in Eldoret that we will call Museum 1:59.
“That is a big deal. We have the best athletes but we don’t capitalize on that. So, we want to change that narrative and be the change we want to see in this country,” commented Bashir.
The Kaptagat-based road race runner achieved that incredible feat on Saturday, October 12, 2019, in Vienna, Austria.
Kipchoge’s wife Grace Sugutt and President William Ruto were part of the individuals who were at the finishing line to congratulate the double Olympic champion for proving that no human is limited.
The PS added that the legendary athlete is part of the heroes council board at the department that she leads.
Bashir also touched on Kipchoge’s maiden appearance at the 2023 Boston Marathon slated for Monday, April 17 in the United States.
“It is going to be his first time to go to the Boston Marathon. It is a different experience for him because of the hilly course.
“It is not like the usual terrain that he is used to. So, it is an exciting thing for us as Kenyans and those who are passionate about sports,” she ended.
