Kenyan Edwin Kibet Wins Ksh 6M in Lagos Marathon

Edwin Kibet Koech of Kenya was the winner of the eighth edition of the Lagos City Marathon.

Kibet, who raced on Saturday morning, February 4, defeated around 300 other marathoners to win the 42-km race.

He will be walking away with the grand prize of Ksh6 million ($50,000).

The 39-year-old finished with a time of 2:14:06 ahead of Ethiopia's Dekeba Shefa and felloe compatriot Bernard Sang who finished second and third respectively.

Dekemba will walk away with ksh5 million ($40,000) while Sang will go home with Ksh3.7 million ($30,000).

In the women's field, Ethiopia's Alemenseh Guta was the winner followed by fellow compatriot Kebene Urisa and Kenya’s Naomi Maiyo in third place.

Both winners from the men's and women’s races qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. 

The 42-km race began at the National Stadium in Surulere with the finish line at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.

Lagos City Marathon is an annual event that was recently upgraded by World Athletics to a gold label.
