This year’s edition of Barthes Cup competition will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi from June 24 to July 3.
A total of four teams led by the defending champions Kenya, Namibia, Senegal and Madagascar have confirmed participation.
This will be the second time Kenya will be hosting the annual tournament which has continued to unearth rugby platforms across board.
In 2019, Kenya hosted and won the competition, defeating the then champions Namibia 21-18 to lift the trophy.
Kenya went on to finish sixth at that year’s World Rugby Junior Trophy tournament in Brazil.
Last year’s edition was not held due to the global Covid-19 pandemic and Kenya will be hoping for a successful tournament since being granted rights to host the tournament for a three year period until 2022.
A 15-man committee has already been appointed to oversee the preparations for the tournament.
The committee will be led by Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Oduor Gangla, chief executive officer Thomas Odundo who will double up as rugby director, KRU treasurer Joshua Aroni, secretary Ian Mugambi, board member Oscar Mango and Ministry of Sports senior official Walter Ongeti.
Gangla expressed confidence that with government back-up, they will have a world class event, that will bring together the heavyweight African Nations
“We will start early preparations and we have a short period remaining to execute the event. The government is supporting us and in due course, we will give an update on the preparations and what to expect,” said Gangla.
