The hunt for gold for the Malkia Strikers begin on Sunday as they face Japan in their Olympics Pool A opener.
The historic match takes place at 1:40pm and it will be a tough test for the Malkia Strikers who are making their debut in the Summer Games.
Head coach Paul Bitok has expressed confidence that his charges will make good account of themselves against Japan.
“We really enjoyed on our first training yesterday (Thursday). We were so excited to be in this arena and I believe it will be the same when we play the first match against hosts Japan on Sunday.”
“It is the first time we have trained for four months and even having 15 days of training outside Kenya.
“We are ready and we hope what we have been doing with the team will give us results. I think the players are motivated to be here at the Olympics.
“We are excited to play the first match. We want to win matches. We want to be in the second round. The girls are in good spirit especially now that everything has been offered by the government.
“We were given good accommodation, good facilities, good uniforms and also allowances were paid in time. We didn’t have problems,” said Bitok.
Malkia will then take on South Korea at 3.45pm on Tuesday 27 July before Serbia at 8.20am on Thursday 29 July. A clash against the Dominican Republic follows at 3.00am on Saturday 31 July. They will wind up their preliminary round fixtures against Brazil at 3.45pm on Monday 2 August.
