The CECAFA Women's Champions League Qualifiers that were postponed earlier this month will now take place from 7th to 21st August in Nairobi. The winner of the tournament will play in the Confederation of Africa Women Champions League slated for November in Cairo Egypt. Kenya has Vihiga Queens as its representative in the slated tournament.
Apparently, postponement was due to financial constraints but through a confirmation, Cecafa Secretary Auka Gecheo said that all is set for the tournament which at one point will run in concurrent with the Cecafa Kagame Cup in Tanzania which kicks off on August 1st.
“We had earlier postponed the tournament due to financial logistics as we could not get the money for the tournament. However, that has now been settled and the tournament will resume on August 7,” Said Gecheo. 7 Teams will feature in the tournament whereas Vihiga Queens are in Pool C and will play Scandinavian (Rwanda) and FAD of Djibouti. Their first match against the Djibouti representative is on August 7th.
Group A comprises Lady Doves (Uganda), PVP Buyenzi (Burundi), and Simba Queens (Tanzania), while Group B will have Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Yei Join Stars (South Sudan), and New Generations FC (Zanzibar). Vihiga lost their Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League title after bowing out in the semi-finals of the play-off, but they have vowed to use that disappointment to battle for the ticket.
