Gor Mahia's Woes Continue yet again as they Fall to Ulinzi

Troubles reigned supreme for Gor Mahia as they lost 1-0 to Ulinzi Stars in match day 28 at ASK Show grounds in Nakuru. For K'Ogalo, this was apparently their 4th defeat in their last six Betking Premier League games. Ulinzi's persistence and hard work paid off in the 18th-minute as they took the lead in spectacular fashion. Masita Masuta's free-kick from the edge of the box hit the post and the towering Alex Masinde reacted quickest to plant in a superb header making it 1-0.

Since the 20th of June, Gor have only managed three points out of the available 18, results that have seen the defending champions slip from third position on the log up to a current eighth position on 40 points, fifteen behind log leading Tusker.

Speaking after the match, Interim coach Sammy Omolo criticized his side for playing badly until Ulinzi Stars scored their goal. He said his side showed effort only after going behind. “Today we did not play well compared to how we played against City Stars. We only started playing well after conceding and it is something I don’t like because these days teams have learned to defend leads even if it’s a 1-0 advantage. Ulinzi for example are very good defensively and they showed that today,” he said.

Omolo also believes that his team should have made good use of the set-piece opportunities that they created. “When the game is hard or when you are not playing too well, you need to make use of set pieces to get goals. Today we got around ten corners and some free-kicks near Ulinzi goal and we did not make use of them and this shows that to get goals we will have to work really hard. To win games you have to make use of the chances that you create. Today we made some chances, Jules (Ulimwengu) had some good chances which he did not take. Also today we opted for high balls when it was clear Ulinzi were dealing with them easily. We should have changed and tried to play low balls to create good chances,” he added. Next for Gor is a derby match against AFC Leopards.
