The Mashemeji derby will for the first time in history be held in Thika as AFC Leopards host Gor Mahia in what is basically a dead rubber match.

The two most decorated clubs will face each other at Thika Stadium amid uncertainty about the match taking place.

On Friday, the two teams wrote a joint letter to the Football Kenya Federation demanding to be paid their owed dues. The FKF in response asked the clubs to provide bank details for the federation to furnish payments.

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are facing serious financial strains and the former have not trained in one week. The reigning champions lost 1-0 to Ulinzi Stars on Monday, slipping further in the league standings. AFC Leopards on the other hand had to come from behind twice to salvage a draw at Nzoia Sugar.

The last five meetings between the two in the league have seen Gor Mahia win four and drawing one.

The two also met in the final of the FKF Betway Cup earlier in the month, with Gor Mahia winning on post-match penalties after the match ended goalless in normal and extra time.

AFC Leopards have not beaten their fierce rivals since the 2016 premier league season and come into the match on the back of disappointing results.

They managed to score in the dying minutes of their last game to avoid losing three games in a row but also face a side who are limping to the finish line.

Their defense which has been chopped and changed frequently due to a combination of contract issues and injuries has conceded seven goals in their last three games and it will be a particular area of concern since they have conceded in eight of their last nine games.

Gor Mahia have now gone seven games without a win in what has been a nightmare campaign for them.

The form of their rivals will give them hope of extending their fine run against them with only four points separating the two.
