Gor Mahia Finally Receives Betway Cup Prize Money

Betway Cup

Dues were finally paid today when Gor Mahia, through Secretary General Sam Ocholla received the long anticipated Ksh 2M Betway Cup prize money. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO Barry Otieno presented the prize to Ocholla after a long tussle between the club itself and the federation.

Gor Mahia had earlier won the cup in July 2021 after edging out AFC Leopards 4-1 on post-match penalties. The Federation is in the process of wiring the winning prize monies to runners-up AFC Leopards, third-placed Bidco United, and fourth-placed Equity’s bank accounts. The disbursement delay sparked a lot of protest from the said clubs, forcing AFC Leopard and Gor Mahia to snub the match-awaited league match 'mashemeji derby' during the past weekend.

Consequently The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee imposed sanctions on the two giants for failure to honor the league game slated for 31st July. Both clubs were also deducted three points, in line with article 3.1.6 of the Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football. In the meantime, the FKF National Executive Committee has provisionally suspended Gor Mahia and AFC Leopard’s chairmen Mr. Ambrose Rachier and Dan Shikanda, pending disciplinary action constituted against them.
