The Kenyan international defender, Joseph Okumu, scored his first goal for Belgium’s club KAA Gent as they claimed a 1-0 victory over Lavian club Rigas FS to qualify for the next round of the Uefa Conference league.

Okumu’s goal came in the 73rd minute, the powerful header gave his side the lead that ended up securing a chance for Belgium to go through to the pay-off round where they will take on Poland’s club Rakow Czestochowa on the 19th of August.

The two sides had played earlier in the first leg with the game ending with a 2-2 draw.

Speaking after the game, Okumu stated that he was very ecstatic.

“I am happy to win. We knew we were going to have to put in 101% to continue today. We have made the best possible use of our qualities, and that has paid off,” said Okumu.

In June 2021, the former Chemelil Sugar player had completed his Ksh 400 million move to KAA Gent.

Gent Sports manager Tim Matthys stated that Okumu’s four-year contract would add his footballing ability to the club’s defence.

“He has a very good vertical passing, and it is no coincidence that he has attracted the attention of many clubs. We are glad he chose us.” stated Matthys.

Okumu is the third Kenyan to feature for the Belgium side after midfielders Robert Mambo and John 'Mo' Muiruri.
