Security at WU20

Security has been intensified at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani ahead of the World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi. Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai said that enough security teams have been mobilized and he hopes the event will be incident free.

"We have enough team and security is intact. We have the same number of officers who were here during the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and that tells you security is guaranteed," said Mutyambai. The Sports Principal Secretary Joe Okudo also said that with the preparations complete, they will be expecting a good performance from the Kenyan team which consists of 46 athletes. "The team looks good and we expect good performance because this is the team we are nurturing for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris," said Okudo.

So far, Teams like Poland, France and Canada have already landed in the country and are having light training sessions ahead of the championships which are only hours away. The opening ceremony will take place on 17 August ahead of the first day of competition on 18 August.

Nairobi won the hosting rights in 2018 after conducting ‘an outstanding final edition’ of the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017. According to reports, at least 60,000 watched the U18 championships at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre. But this time, the fans will not be watching the action due to Covid-19 restrictions.
