Nairobi Swimming Association secretary, Kenneth Karani lamented on how the national swimming body has already outlived its purpose with regards to the long awaited elections of the association.

Since 2017, elections are still yet to be conducted and Karani has pushed for a probe by the Sports Cabinet Secretary , Amina Mohamed in reviewing the issue.

"This body was formed in 2017 and up to now, we are still waiting on the elections. We are asking the Cabinet Secretary to form a new committee with the mandate to hold elections in the next six months," said Karani.

Karani also added that some members of the committee had moved to block the elections following the enactment of a new constitution. Apparently, the new constitution was ratified early this year, January but elections are still yet to be done and finalised.

The swimming association now risks facing a ban from the International body if no election will be conducted. Karani said they have the backing of coaches in all the swimming counties, who want an end to the stalemate. "The secretary general and a member have now gone to the constitutional court and filed an injunction, a conflict of interest. If nothing is done, the sport will die and we are asking the ministry to intervene and provide a way forward and help our young swimmers," he said.

All this also comes after FINA commissioned the building of a state-of-the-art facility in neighbouring Tanzania, a move that could have Kenya in the plans too if we're not for the pending matter at hand.
