Wisdom Nayah's left foot has been amputated at a hospital in India after his doctors and family arrived at the decision to prevent the cancerous soft tissue sarcoma from spreading to other parts of the body.
The Sofapaka player in 2021 confirmed he was diagnosed with cancer and was appealing for help to seek further treatment in India.
The 18-year-old midfielder joined Sofapaka in the 2019 January transfer window after signing a three-year contract that saw him play a number of games for the club before Kenya's tier one league was suspended.
The family which resides in Tuwan in Kitale says Wisdom developed complications from what they suspected was a normal knock injury in 2020. They later decided to seek medication which revealed that it was not a normal injury.
It is during this time that Nayah noticed all was not well after a series of tests, which revealed he was suffering from Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer.
According to the diagnosis, Nayah was suffering from a thigh tumor known as Soft Tissue Sarcoma which is a rare type of cancer that begins in the tissues that connect, support and surround other body structures.
The young midfielder however noted that he was determined to overcome the deadly cancer and come back stronger on the pitch.
“Cancer is beatable and I’m confident I will come back stronger. I know of people who have won this battle. I must return to football,” Nayah stated.
Nayah helped St. Anthony clinch Kenya secondary schools sports association KSSSA in 2018 and junior Africa cup of nations in the same year impressed a number of football clubs before signing for Sofapaka in 2019 with a contract that was set to expire in January 2022.
After his successful surgery, Nayah is now recovering in India and will fly back to Kenya on January, 14.
