Top 5 High Schools That Have Produced Rugby Stars

Schools are mainly known to produce professions like engineers, doctors, and teachers among others.

However, some Kenyan high schools have not only produced office professionals but also stars in the rugby discipline.

TeamKenya takes a look at some of the top five rugby players and the high schools they attended.

Vihiga High School - Collins Injera 

Arguably one of Kenya’s most decorated rugby players, Collins Injera was once a key figure of the Kenyan 7-aside rugby team. 

Injera holds the record of having the most tries (279) and also Kenya's top scorer with 1,443 points as well as having the most caps to his name (78). 

Kisumu Boys - Andrew Amonde 

Kenya's captain in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Andrew Amonde, has featured for Kenya 7s for more than 15 years. 

Amonde began his journey with Kenya 7s at the George Sevens in South Africa during the 2006/2007 World Rugby Sevens Series. 

He has also had the privilege to lead the national sevens team to the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens semi-finals, the 2016 Singapore Sevens victory and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. 

Dr. Aggrey High School - Willy Ambaka 

One of the most accomplished Kenyan rugby players, Willy Ambaka has featured for the national sevens team as well as international club Manawatu in New Zealand’s Mitre 10 Cup. 

Ambaka, who started to play rugby back in 2005, is an alumni of Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta County. 

Kakamega Highschool - Humphrey Kayange 

Kenya's legendary rugby player, Humphrey Kayange, is one of the most celebrated players of all time having recently been inducted into the World Rugby's Hall of Fame. 

Kayange, who is the brother of Collins Injera, has been a key player for Kenya having featured at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series from 2004 to 2016. 

Kayange, who studied at Kakamega High School, was in the squad that won Kenya’s first-ever World Series Cup title in Singapore in 2016.
