Kenyans Walk Away With Millions After Boston Marathon Triumph

Boston Marathon champions are usually feted with a gold-plated olive branch, the athletes hoist a silver trophy and go home with a hefty pay.  

This year's edition was the 126th race with Ksh101 million ($879,500) the total prize money being divided among the top performers. 

Five Kenyan athletes were among the best three athletes in both the men's and women's races walking away with cumulative Ksh46 million cash prize.

Boston Marathon winners Peres Jepchirchir and Evans Chebet after topping both men's races each bagged Ksh17 million ($150,000). 

Evans Chebet won the Men's 2022 Boston Marathon clocking 2:6:51. After his finish, the Kenyan athlete insisted on conducting the interview in Swahili forcing the journalist to look for a translator.

Coming in second was Kenya's Lawrence Cherono who clocked a time of 2:07:21 going home with Ksh8.6 million ($75,000).  

Benson Kipruto who finished third with a time of 2:07:27 went home with Ksh1.7 million ($15,000). 

In the women's division, Peres Jepchirchir bagged gold after she clocked a time of 2:21:01. 

Jepchirchir who is also the Tokyo Olympics and New York Marathon champion after her triumph in Boston became the first athlete, male or female, to win all three in a year. 

Kenya's Mary Wacera Ngugi finished third walking away with ksh1.7 million ($15,000) 

The organisers of the Boston Marathon opted to postpone the event in 2020 due to the outbreak of the pandemic
