The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games have seen Kenyan sporting officials make history by reaching milestones in their careers.

After four days at the event, Kenya collected two medals in the men's and women's marathon. However, it is Peter Kabaso Obalo who made headlines after officiating his first Commonwealth match.

The Kenyan umpire is an official at the Commonwealth Games after being appointed by the Federation of International Hockey.

At the Commonwealth Games, Obalo officiated alongside Fraser Bell (Scottland) and Tim Bond (Newzealand) the match between India and Ghana.

In what was India's second game at the Commonwealth Games, Ghana suffered a 11-0 loss.

Kabaso, 36, received his first umpiring cap in 2015 in the African Cup of Nations.

The Kenyan - in a past interview - revealed that during past secondary school games, he witnessed poor officiating which inspired his journey to become an official.

“While watching secondary school games years ago, I was angered by one official who was very biased against one team.

“After seeing that game, I decided to become an official (umpire) and make sure that games are always decided by the players on the pitch and not a poor official,” he noted earlier.

In the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, Kabaso was awarded the Ayman Amin Umpire of the Year Award in the men’s category.

In November 2021, he was the only Kenyan official at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men’s Junior World Cup in India.
