The Kenyan women team registered impressive results at the third Mount Everest International Open Taekwondo Championship staged in Nepal, Pokhara on Sunday evening, September 25, 2022.

“It is surely a Super Sunday. Sharon Wakoli who’s on our Olympic Solidarity scholarship gets a bronze medal in Nepal.

“Jully Musangi gets a Gold medal. Congratulations ladies,” read a statement from NOCK.

The two women were using the high profile championship which was delayed last year due to the pandemic for the preparation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Wakoli who doubles up as a sign language interpreter embraced Taekwondo by luck. Immediately after completing high school studies in 2011, Sharon’s father advised her to look for something to keep her busy as she awaited to join University.

The medical student at the University of Nairobi was among eleven Kenyan prodigies who received a Ksh1,000,000 scholarship from NOCK to help them prepare for the Paris Games.

Others who were awarded the scholarship include Kenya’s tennis teen sensation Angella Okutoyi, swimmer Rosafio Danilo and cyclist Debe Akinyi.

The focus of the Kenyan Taekwondo team now shifts to the 2023 African Games scheduled to take place in Acca, Ghana. The tournament will also serve as a pathway for Paris Olympic Games qualification.
