Google Announces Most Searched World Cup Teams & Players

Google has released data showing the top five searched teams at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with Portugal topping the list. 

According to Google Search Trends released on Friday, December 16, Morocco’s national team attracted global admiration for being Africa’s first team to reach the semi-finals. 

The Atlas Lions lost to defending champions France in the semifinals of the tournament and will now play against Croatia on Saturday, December 17 at the Khalifa International Stadium with the third place up for grabs.

“According to the data, the top searched World Cup teams in the past week were Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, and Morocco in that order. 

“Before the tournament started, Kenyans together with 19 other African countries mostly searched for information about Portugal while Morocco with its 5 neighbors in northern Africa looked for information about Morocco’s national team while the rest of Africa searched for information about the Argentinian national team,” read the statement in part. 

Cristiano Ronaldo was the most searched player worldwide followed by Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Brazil’s Neymar, and France’s Kylian Mbappé. 

Croatian captain Luka Modrić closed the list of the top five most searched World Cup players for the period under consideration. 

The Morocco-France match saw Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Yassine Bounou, Hakim Ziyech, Sofiane Boufal, and Sofyan Amrabat emerge as the most searched players in that order.

From the French team Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, and Aurélien Tchouaménie were the most searched members of the squad.
