Benjamin Mendy was on Thursday, August 26, suspended by his club after being charged by the Cheshire Constabulary with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Police added that the 27-year-old defender has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at the Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 27.

“The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021,” Cheshire Constabulary said in a statement.

Mendy joined City from Monaco in 2017. He has won the Premier League three times with City although injuries have limited his playing time, with the left back undergoing knee surgery in the 2018-19 season.

The defender was also part of the City squad that defeated Norwich last weekend.

The city released a statement declining to comment further on the matter as it is under investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process, and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete,” read City’s statement.
