Gor Mahia completed a perfect comeback to beat Al Ahly Merowe of Sudan 3-1 in the first leg of their Caf Confederation Cup first round match played at the New Suez Stadium in Egypt on Friday October 15.
The hosts took the lead in the 42nd minute of the game when Ahmed Abok fired past Gad Matthew but Samuel Onyango restored parity in the 55th minute through a spot kick.
Benson Omalla headed in Gor Mahia’s second before Jules Ulimwengu completed the rout.
The Sudanese side, perhaps playing in an unfamiliar ‘homeground’ did little to threaten the 19-time Kenyan champions and despite the goal, they were second best on the night.
With the win, Gor Mahia have had their work easened and will be seeking to complete the job in the return leg next week. K’Ogalo won the trophy the named ‘The Mandela Cup’ in 1987 by beating Esperance of Tunisia in a two-legged final.
