On January 13, 2018, Michael Olunga made history by becoming the first Kenyan to score a La Liga hat-trick for Girona.
Since then, Girona have celebrated the day as a tradition to mark four years since the hat trick in the first division.
La Liga also took to their social media to highlight the achievements Olunga had while playing for Girona.
“Olunga’s Day, a tradition to celebrate every year! Today is four years since that HAT-TRICK in the first division. Not to forget!” Girona's tweet read.
“First Kenyan to score in La Liga Santander, first Kenyan to score a hat trick in La Liga Santander. On this day in 2018, Ogada Olunga made history for Girona FC!” La Liga's tweet read.
The striker had a memorable achievement in his football career despite the struggles he endured in the Spanish competition.
Although his Girona stay was not a successful one, in the end, Olunga wrote his name in the club’s history books when his three goals ensured the Catalan club dismantled Las Palmas 6-0.
His La Liga hat-trick was recorded in a span of 22 minutes as Olunga came off the bench to score in the 57th, 70th and 79th minutes as he became the first player to record a top-flight treble for Girona in their debut season in La Liga.
Olunga at that time was 23 years old while on loan at Girona from Chinese club Guizhou Hengfeng.
After playing in 14 matches and scoring three goals, Olunga joined Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol in August 2018, where he has emerged as one of the fan favourites due to his superb goal-scoring form.
Olunga has been a dependable goal scorer for the clubs he has served up to now in his career.
