The sports fraternity in the country has undergone a paradigm shift with the world gazing a spotlight on the untapped talent that Kenya has to offer.
This has seen breakout stars from various sports be it football, Athletics, cricket, rugby, impress the world and make history by breaking records.
However, most of the personalities have taken on other tasks when they are not on the pitch or track- with some turning into money minting ventures.
Teamkenya.co.ke takes a look at 5 personalities with lucrative side hustles.
Dominic Samson Ndingiti:
Hailing from humble beginnings, walking race champion Dominic Samson Ndingiti made history by bagging the country's first medal for the boys 10,000 metres.
However, unbeknownst to most, Ndingiti ventured into jua kali business at the time the pandemic struck.
The venture was started as a result of an athlete's craft making skills which was learnt at an early age. One jiko goes for between Ksh2,000 and Ksh5,000 depending on the demand.
Adrian Otieno:
Otieno, who holds a diploma in tourism management from Zetech University is synonymous with playing for Mathare United for the U-20 side.
The footballer runs a successful car wash business in Huruma, Nairobi County. During a past media interview, he noted that the venture sprung from the economic crisis brought about by the pandemic- a time that all sporting activities were suspended. He noted that from the business, he is able to take care of his family and set aside funds to further his education once schools re-open.
Sylvia Wairimu:
Born on December 4, 1984, Sylivia Wairimu Kinyua has honed her skills in becoming one of the elite players in the country's cricket team.
However, when she is not on the cricket pitch, Kinyua is running her own water business. The cricketer is the brain behind Rhea Purified Drinking Water.
The business is situated along Manyanja Road at Donholm.
Helen Obiri:
The world 5000 metres champion has won multiple accolades in the course of her career. From clinching gold in the 2017 World Championships in London to defending her title at the 2019 World Championships, in Doha, Obiri has broken records in various tournaments.
Apart from athletics, Obiri is a farmer who grows food crops to feed the hungry. She noted that the venture creates a bonding time with her family
Currently, she grows vegetables and maize and looks to expand to other crops.
Eliud Kipchoge:
Kenya's world record holder and revered athlete, Eliud Kipchoge is raking in millions from his career highlights.
Kipchoge sold his images taken at the INEOS Challenge in Vienna, Austria for Ksh3 million. The images were sold in the form of a Non-Fungible Token (NFTs).
The acclaimed athlete also owns a tea farm where he spends most of his time when he is not in training/ participating in events.
