As much of a privilege as it is to host the Olympic Games, the honour comes along with expenses that are quite high to foot.

The cost of hosting the tournament has at times caused financial constraints. Canada for example faced a deficit after the construction of the Olympics park in Montreal in 1976.

Since 1960, every Olympics has run over budget with various expenditures from construction, ceremonies, and catering.

The costliest Olympics of all time is the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, held between February 7, and February 23, in Sochi, Russia.

The Olympics registered the highest number of participating nations (88), the highest number of athletes (2873), and the highest number of events (98) of any Winter Games.

During the Olympics in 2014, Russia roughly spent an estimated ksh5 trillion ($50.7 billion) on non-sports-related infrastructure which was approximated to be 85 per cent of the total budget.

The huge expenditure was meant to serve Russia's major goals as a country. These include hastening regional development, building state-of-the-art infrastructure and propelling Sochi into a league of world-class resorts.

The second goal was to highlight to the outside world that Russia is open and free for anyone to visit.

During the Sochi Olympics, a minimum of Ksh215 billion ($1.92 billion) was budgeted for security with regard to operational costs.

What contributed to the high-security costs was that during the preparation period for the Games, authorities perceived a growing threat from terrorist attacks and in December 2013, just weeks before the Olympic Games in Volgograd there was an insecurity incident.

As a result, Sochi was turned into a fortress during the Olympic Games, with security checks and a strong military and police presence.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games was the first time for the Russian Federation to host the tournament.
