Kenyan Female Footballers Making a Mark in European Football

As Kenya’s football grows, local players are also making strides and are establishing themselves in foreign leagues. 

However the spotlight has been mainly in the men's league with the likes of Victor Wanyama, Michael Olunga among others having success in the foreign leagues. 

In the case of women footballers, the doors to play in foreign clubs opened in 2009, with Doreen Nabwire becoming the first Kenyan woman to play professional football in Europe.

TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at the female football players who are making their mark in the European Leagues.

Cynthia Shilwatso 

Cynthia Shilwatso plays in the Spanish Women's League for Logrono where she joined in 2020 after signing a three-year contract. 

The 22-year-old began her career at Kenya Women's Premier League side Vihiga Queens where she featured for their under 20 team. 

At Vihiga Queens the footballer was able to lift four league titles in a row. 

She has also featured for Harambee Starlets where she clinched the 2019 CECAFA Women’s Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

Ruth Ingotsi 

Ruth Ingots is based in Cyprus where she plays for Cypriot top tier side AEL Champions FC. 

The Harambee Starlets defender has had a long spell in Cyprus as a footballer as she initially played for Lacatamia FC before joining  AEL Champions FC in September 2020. 

The 27-year-old who can play in any defensive position dream is set to feature in the UEFA women's Champions League.

Corazon Aquino 

One of Kenya's women's football rising stars plies her trade in Portugal for top tier side Atletico Ouriense. 

The 23-year-old joined Atletico Ouriense in 2020 from Sweden where she was under trials to join top tier side, FC Rosengard, with no success. 

The midfielder has had a good run with the national team Harambee Starlets and was the fifth Starlets’ player to land a deal abroad. 

Annedy Kundu 

Annedy who is Harambee Starlets first-choice goalkeeper plays in one of the top European Leagues. 

The 25-year-old joined Cypriot Division One side Lakatamia FC on a three-year deal in January 2020. 

However, in September 2022 the goalkeeper transferred to AEL Champions on a two-year deal.
