Kenyans Who've Made History in the International Sports Scene

Kenya is known mainly for its long distance athletics prowess with the likes of Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei dominating the global scene.

However, there are also other sports personalities who have dominated in their respective disciplines.

TeamKenya takes a look at some of the sport personalities who have made a name for themselves and the country in the sports world.

Eliud Kipchoge 

Eliud Kipchoge in August 2020, proved to the entire world that no human is Limited as he became the first human in history to run a sub-two-hour marathon. Kipchoge ran the 42KM staged marathon in the city of Vienna, Austria with a remarkable time of 1:59:40:2.

Afterwards Eliud was able to emerge victorious at the 2020 Olympics as he finished at pole position to take gold after an outstanding performance. 

Recently the 37-year-old emerged victorious in the Tokyo Marathon, clocking a time of 2hr 2min 40sec, the fourth-fastest time in history. 

The Olympic gold medalist has recorded a total of four victories out of his six major marathons.
 

McRae Kimathi 

Mc Rae Kimathi who is named after 1995 FIA World Rally Champion, Colin McRae, has become one of the iconic rally drivers that Kenya has ever produced.

McRae is the son of one of Kenya's legendary Rally drivers Phineas Kimathi, the current President of the Kenya Motorsport Federation and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Kenya.

The 27-year-old won first  Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) that was held in Machakos in 2015. This was followed by his first Safari in 2016 where he crashed out before moving to autocross in a bid to gain more experience.

In 2017, McRae finished second in the Autocross Championship and fourth in 2018. 

McRae was the first Kenyan to ever enter the FIA Junior WRC Championship and became the fourth African driver to ever compete in Junior WRC. 

Michael Olunga 

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is one of the most successful Kenyan footballers having played in various major leagues around the world. 

Olunga has had the privilege to play in various football leagues in countries such as Sweden, Japan, Spain and Qatar. 

While in Japan, the 27-year-old was named the J. League MVP becoming the first African to win the award in the Japanese top-flight history. 

In the 2020 season, Olunga scored 28 goals for Kashiwa Reysol and helped his side finish in seventh-place.

When he was playing for Girona in Spain, Olunga locally known as Engineer, made history by becoming the first Kenyan to score a La Liga hat-trick. 

Currently, the prolific striker plays his trade for Qatar side Al Duhail where he has showcased his prowess by becoming the league's top scorer. 

In January 2022, Olunga was also named as the Asian Champions League top scorer after finishing the tournament with nine goals for Al Duhail SC.  

The Harambee Stars captain became the first Kenyan and Al Duhail player to win the Asian award.

Ferdinand Omanyala 

Ferdinand Omanyala is among the few Kenyan short distance runners who takes part mainly in the 100 metre races. 

Since his entry in the 100m race the Kenyan athlete has broken record after record. 

The 26-year-old athlete was named the fastest man in Africa after clocking a time of 9.77 in September 2021. 

Omanyala also holds the National record in 60 metres indoor races after clocking a time of 6.57 seconds at the Meeting Hauts-de- France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin, France. 

His recent achievement came in March 2022 as he set another record with a world lead time of 10.00 seconds during the Third Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meeting at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Angela Okutoyi 

One of the rising stars in Tennis, Angela Okutoyi has represented Kenya in various tournaments where she has had success.

Okutoyi’s journey to become a tennis professional started at the age of four years where and has grown her craft to international status.

Her recent victory came at the Australian Open where she debuted in a junior grand slam event.

The 18-year-old represented Kenya for the first time in 16 years as she played at the Australian Open Juniors.

Ranked 71 in the world, Okutoyi's participation at the junior grand slam tournament was also the second time a Kenyan has played at the tournament.
