Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie has rooted for Kenya to host the 2025 World Athletics Championship in 2025.
The World Athletics Championship is among one of the biggest athletics competitions in the athletics calendar year.
Gebrselassie while speaking to Nation Sport noted that Kenya has what it takes to host the competition as it will benefit Africa at large.

“Kenya has shown that it can host bigger events and when this happens, we all benefit as Africa. I still remember the World Cross Country Championships held in Mombasa in 2007 which was a world-class event,” Gebrselassie noted.
Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa put in bids to be hosts of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
According to the legendary athlete, Kenya hosting the event benefits the country and the continent economically.
Gebrselassie noted that other African countries should offer their support for Kenya to open the way for more competitions to be held in Africa.
He added that the continent should stage more local competitions as through such many athletes will be able to develop their careers further.
“We managed to stage the 2021 Total Energies Great Ethiopian Run International 10km road race after postponing it due to the political instability in our country. It has always helped many athletes locally identify their potential and earn something small.
“It has also helped them get professional managers because that’s where coaches and managers pick athletes and sponsor them to various races,” he added.
