Football is undoubtedly one of the biggest sporting events globally and attracts wealth businessmen who invest heavily in football clubs.

This is also the case in Africa and a good investment always amounts to success in most of the times. 

TeamKenya takes a look at some of the top African football club owners and their contribution to African football.

Patrice Matsepe 

The South African billionaire is the owner of the Mamelodi Sundowns, a South African professional football club. 

Mamelodi Sundowns are currently topping the South African Premier Division with 54 points with 24 matches played. 

Motsepe is also the President of the Confederation of African Football and is estimated to be worth Ksh392 billion (USD3.4 billion). 

Kunle Soname 

The Nigerian billionaire owns the Remo Stars Football Club, a Nigerian side and also owns Portuguese side, Clube Desportivo Feirense. 

Soname is a well-renowned Nigerian politician and a businessman who is also the chairman of Bet9ja - a Nigerian betting company. 

In 2015, he purchased the Portuguese side Clube Desportivo Feirense becoming the first Nigerian to acquire a European club. 

Irvin Khoza 

He is the chairman of the South African football club Orlando Pirates, the only South African team to have won the African Champions League Cup. 

Khoza is also chairperson of the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) and has an estimated worth of Ksh4 billion (USD35 million). 

Kaizer Motaung 

He owns the Kaizer Chiefs, a South African professional football club. He founded the club and served as its Chairman and Managing Director. 

Kaizer Chiefs has won numerous trophies in the South African leagues. 

The 77-year-old has an estimated net worth of Ksh4.6 billion (USD40 million). 

Mohammed Dewji 

The former Tanzanian politician owns a 49 per cent stake in the Simba Sports Club, a football club based in Tanzania. 

The 46-year-old Tanzanian billionaire businessman is estimated to be worth Ksh173 billion (USD1.5 billion). 

Moise Katumbi 

He is also the owner of the Congolese football club TP Mazembe, the only African football club that owns two private jets. 

It has been reported that the 57-year-old businessman bought the jets using his own funds. 

Katumbi, who is a former governor of Katanga, has a net worth of approximately Ksh173 billion (USD1.5 Million).
