
The Kenyan volleyball team Malkia Strikers has been pooled in Group A of the summer olympic games that will be held in Tokyo,Japan as from the 25th of July to the 8th of August.
The Malkia Strikers have been pooled in the Group A alongside the hosts Japan ,South Korea ,Serbia ,Dominican Republic and Brazil.
Volleyball games will Kick off on the 25th of July despite other games set to start on the 23rd. Kenya will take on hosts Japan in their first fixture which will be considered a tough one due to Japan's homeground advantage.
The Paul Bitok coached side will again take on South Korea two days later for their second fixture scheduled on the 27th of July before clashing with Serbia on the 29th.Kenya will again face Domnican Republic and Brazil on the 31st and 2nd of August respectively as they set their sight on the gold medal.
The team is currently undergoing high intensity training in a bubble camp at the Moi International Stadium Kasarani ahead of the summer games despite their high performance training visit to Brazil being cancelled by the government due to the high rise of Covid 19 cases in the South American nation.
Kenya’s National Women's volleyball team will be Africa’s representative in the Olympic games this summer, participating for the first time since Athens 2004 making a comeback to the global event after 16 years.
Malkia Strikers qualified for the women's volleyball tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after sealing victory in the African qualifier in Cameroon's capital Yaounde, last year.
A win over Nigeria saw the Kenyans through into the summer games after completing their campaign in the continental showdown where Kenyans were drawn in the single five-team pool made up of Egypt, Cameroon, Botswana, Nigeria and Kenya.
The Kenyan team will be marking their third appearance at the olympics,after showing up for the first time in Sydney Australia in the year 2000 and Kenya came out at 11th place in the overall competition before jetting to Athens for the 2004 olympics showpiece.
