Kenya's Dim Hope as World Athletics Championships Near End

In the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Oregon Kenya has so far harvested six medals (1gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze). 

Some of the athletes who have made to the podium include 10,000m silver medalist Stanley Waithaka Mburu, 1,500m gold medalist Faith Kipyegon and 3,000m men steeplechase bronze medalist Conseslus Kipruto (1,500m). 

Kenya was hopeful to collect more medals in the men's 1,500m race from Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang, however, the Kenyan duo finished sixth and seventh respectively. The race was won by Britain's Jake Wightman.

With four days to the end of the Oregon World Athletic Championship TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at the remaining races in which Kenyans will be participating. 

Women’s 5,000m 

The Women’s 5,000m heats are scheduled for Thursday Morning, July 21. 

After Hellen Obiri pulled out of the 5000m race Kenya will be represented by Margaret Chelimo (bronze medalist 10,000m), Beatrice Chebet (the reigning African Champion) and Gloria Kite. 

Men’s 800m 

The men's 800m heats are scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 21. 

In this track event, Kenya has failed to win gold since 2015 when David Rudisha won at the Beijing World Championships. 

Kenya will be banking on Emmanuel Korir (Olympic champion), Emmanuel Wanyonyi (World Under-20 Champion), Noah Kibet and Wycliffe Kinyamal(Commonwealth Games champion). 

Women’s 3,000m steeplechase final 

The Women’s 3,000m steeplechase final will take place on Thursday morning, July 20. 

Kenya will have  Celiphine Chespol, a former World Under 20 and Under 18 champion as the only representative in this track event.
