World Championships: 3 Kenyans Into Womens 5,000m Final

The Kenyan trio of Margaret Chelimo, Beatrice Chebet and Gloria Kite qualified for the women’s 5,000m final at the World Athletics Championships. 

On Thursday morning, July 21, Kenya’s hope of getting more medals increased with three athletes set to battle out in the 5,000m race. 

The duo of Chelimo (10,000m bronze medalist) and Chebet received an automatic qualification from Heat One.

Kite qualified as one of the non-automatic qualifiers thanks to her time in Heat Two where she finished sixth. 

The Kenyans will be facing stiff competition from some of the top athletes from different nations like Ethiopia, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan. 

Ethiopia will be represented by the newly crowned world 10,000m champion Letesenbet Gidey, Gudaf Tsegay and Dawit Seyaum. 

The newly crowned Women's Steeplechase champion Norah Jeruto will be representing Kazakhstan as she hopes to get her country its second medal in Oregon. 

Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands will be seeking to improve from her loss in the 10,00m race where she finished fourth. 

Other notable names included Karoline Bjerkeli(Norway), Elise Cranny (USA) and Karissa Schweizer (USA), 

The 5,00womens final is slated to take place on Sunday morning, July 25.
