In many occasions, athletes fail to take part in competition either due to an injury or they are serving a ban.

However, this is not the case for Kenyan athlete Eric Kiptanui who missed a chance to race after his name was not entered on the start list.

On July 30, Kiptanui was thus disqualified from the Commonwealth Games marathon.

The athlete travelled with the Kenyan team and has been training for the marathon in England hopeful that his situation would be resolved.

The name that was inserted in the entry list was that of Erick Kiplagat Sang, a 21 years old Kenyan who has two 1500-metre runs in 2021 and a half marathon this year on his record.

Kiptanui who is an experienced long-distance runner has had success in some of his races having finished second in the Dubai Marathon 2020.

In the 2021 Chicago marathon, he finished third, with his last event at the Boston Marathon in April 2022 where he finished fifth.

Before the Commonwealth Games, Kenya's Philemon Kacheran was handed a provisional suspension for the use of a prohibited substance by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Michael Githae, who was initially on the reserve list replaced Kcheran.

Kenya is being represented in the men's marathon by Philemon Kacheran, Jonathan Korir and Michael Githae.
