France president Emmanuel Macron has revealed the possibility of a friendly match between France and Algeria.

It has been more than 20 years since the two tested each other's strengths in a warm-up match. Their last friendly on October 6, 2001, ended with the invasion of the pitch by Algerian fans at the Stade de France.

"We will obviously talk about it with the Algerian president (Abdelmadjid Tebboune) and the teams. It's not for me to say, and then it will also depend on the chance of the competitions to come.

“Culture [...] and sport are fields where we must be together. So sometimes we can fight, but we fight friendly,” he stated.

President Macron is on a three-day tour in Algeria as he seeks to strengthen the cooperation and partnership between both countries.

Both countries have enjoyed success in recent times, with Desert Foxes winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt while France conquered the rest of the world to win the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

In 2019, French Football Federation President Noel Le Graët noted the desire he had for both countries to play against each other.

"Ever since I'm here (as president of FFF), I've wanted to go to Algeria. It's the only country we have not played against.

"It is time to make this match. I will move as quickly as possible to see in what conditions we can organize this game.

"Usually, we make these decisions on our own but it's such an important match that political agreement is needed. But the French team has a duty to play in Algeria," Noel Le Graët noted.

He however highlighted that it required consultation with the French government and getting the agreement of French president Emmanuel Macron.
