Five Kenyan Athletes Selected for Brussels Diamond League

3,000m steeplechase women’s world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Stanley Waithaka Mburu headline the upcoming Brussels Diamond League slated for Friday, September 2 in Belgium.

 

Chepkoech, who missed the World Athletics Championships due to personal reasons will be returning to action after several weeks in the cold.

The 31-year-old broke the 3,000m steeplechase world record at the 2018 Monaco Diamond League held at the Stade Louis II stadium in France.

She took control of the race from the start, crossing the finishing line in 8:44.32, in the process shattering the previous world record of 8: 52,78  set by Ruth Jebet in August, 2016. 

Chepkoech will compete against the likes of Kenyan-born Bahrain international Winfred Mutile Yavi and Ethiopia's Werkuha Getachew.

The latter clocked 8:54.61 to clinch a silver medal in Oregon behind Kazakhstan's Norah Jeruto.

Mburu who broke into the limelight during the 2022 World Athletics Championships staged in Eugene, United States will square it out with the likes of Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo in the 5,000m race.

Chelimo, who recently graduated to the senior category, is the younger brother of the 2020 World Half Marathon winner Jacob Kiplimo. 

800m Commonwealth Games champion Mary Moraa will also be in contention. She will line up in the 400m race alongside Cynthia Bolingo of Belgium and Lieke Klaver.

Kibiwott Kandie and Sebastian Kimaru Sawe have also been confirmed for the Memorial Van Damme Diamond League. 

They will both compete in the one hour discipline, where athletes try their best to cover the longest distance possible within an hour.
