Kenya’s fast-rising starlet Angella Okutoyi was bundled out of the 2022 US Open Grand Slam juniors single category on Monday night, September 5.

The 18-year-old displayed a brave performance but her hopes of proceeding to the next round were dashed by American Taylah Preston.

Preston, who is ranked higher than Okutoyi started the match on a high, comfortably winning the first set 6-2.

Okutoyi came back strongly to narrowly win the second set before being hammered 6-1 in the deciding set.

Despite the loss, all is not lost for Okutoyi as she has a chance of redeeming herself in the Girl's Doubles category.

The former Kenyan Open champion will have a chance of winning a second Girls Doubles Grand slams title when she teams up with Dutch Rose Marie Nijkamp.

Nijkamp, who comes from the Netherlands, helped Okutoyi to win her maiden grand slam title in July at the Wimbledon tournament.

The duo, who met on social media, will square it out with the pair of Danish international Johanne Christine Svendsen and American Qavia Lopez in the first round on Wednesday at 11pm East African Time.

Angella recently bagged a Doubles title at the 2022 J1 Repentigny junior tournament staged in Canada. She partnered with polish lass Malwinka Rowinska to beat Ella Seidel and Amelia Waligora (3-6, 6-2, 10-8) in the final.

The US Open Grand slam tournament will be Okutoyi’s final junior tournament since from next year she will be transitioning to the senior category.
