
Hellen Obiri, one of Kenya’s most decorated athletes, is set to make her full marathon debut at the TSC New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6, 2022.
The 32-year-old is fresh from defending her title at the Great North Run in the United Kingdom. She ran a tactical race to outpace the reigning TSC New York Marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir a few minutes to the finishing line.
In New York, Obiri is expected to line up against some of the best athletes from different corners of the world, particularly from East Africa.

Speaking ahead of her debut, Obiri divulged that she is planning to enjoy herself in one of the world's toughest road races.
“I can’t say I’m going to target this time or this time – it’s my debut. I can’t say maybe I want to do sub 2:20, 2:25 because I know the New York Marathon is a tough course, especially the second half.”
“For me, I want to train well because it’s my debut, and for sure, I’m looking forward to running a good race – I’m looking forward to running my own race with no pressure and to finish well,” she was quoted by CNN.
Obiri who has pitched her camp in the United States has a half marathon personal best of 1:04.51 going into the race. She has also won numerous titles including 2 World Championships and 2 Olympic gold medals.
The New York City Marathon course record is currently being held by Margaret Okayo. Okayo, a Kenyan international set the record of 2:22.31 during the 2003 edition.
The TSC New York City Marathon is among the five Abbott World Marathon majors.
London Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, Chicago Marathon and Boston Marathon are the other four road races that are part of the Abbott World Marathon majors.
