Michael Jordan's iconic 1998 NBA Finals 'The Last Dance' jersey traded at Kh1.2 billion (10.1 million USD), setting the record for the most expensive basketball jersey sold at an auction.

According to an announcement by the auction house, Sotheby's, the jersey also set other two records for the most expensive sports memorabilia and the most valuable Michael Jordan item ever sold at auction.

Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey held the previous record for any game-worn sports memorabilia after it fetched ksh1.1 billion ($9.3 million USD) earlier this year.

“The historic jersey was worn during what is arguably the most celebrated season of Jordan’s legendary and storied career, when the superstar cemented his legacy as the greatest basketball player of all time,” Sotheby’s stated.

During the 1998 NBA Finals, the Bulls lost by three points in Game 1 with Jordan playing 45 minutes, the most of any game in the finals.

The NBA legend also registered 33 points to help send the game into overtime.

In the NBA 1998 season, Jordan was named the NBA Finals MVP for a sixth time with the Bulls winning their sixth NBA Championship.

Previously an autographed relic card from 1997-1998 held the record for the most expensive item in Jordan’s sports memorabilia after being sold at Ksh324 million (2.7 million USD).

Kobe Bryant’s game-worn and autographed jersey from the 1996-1997 season, which sold for ksh444 million (3.7 million USD), held the record for a basketball jersey.
