Former Gor Mahia defender Innocent Wafula never represented Kenya despite being talented due to the uncertainty that surrounded his origin.

Wafula produced a couple of fantastic performances during his stint at Gor Mahia which earned him a call up to the Kenyan national team in 2015.

However, his dream of donning the Harambee Stars jersey was shuttered in the eleventh hour when the then Kenyan head coach Bobby Williamson dropped him days before a fixture against Cape Verde.

The Scottish tactician dropped Wafula from the Harambee Stars squad not because he was not up to the task, but rather due to the concerns regarding his true country of birth.

Wafula could not get a passport due to mix ups about his nationality and thus it became impossible for him to represent Kenya.

There were reports that the 24-year-old  was born in Busia but later represented a Ugandan learning institution during the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games.

Other reports indicated that Wafula was born in Kenya. The confusion about his origin made it difficult for him to get a passport and represent Kenya in international competitions.

However, after years of dilemma, Wafula was called to the Ugandan national team on May 26, 2021.

The player trended on social media on Saturday night, September 24, 2022 after Gor Mahia posted a quiz asking their followers to identify their former star who was celebrating a goal with Rwandan international Jacques Tuyisenge.

“Nothing to see here, just Jacques Tuyisenge celebrating a routine goal with our former player... who is the player?” read a statement from K’Ogalo.

The tweet went viral bringing up the debate about his nation of origin, with some claiming that Wafula is a Kenyan who was denied a chance to represent his motherland while others argued that he is a Ugandan.
