President William Ruto has nominated Ababu Namwamba as the new Sports Cabinet Secretary.
Namwamba's appointment comes at a time when Kenya is facing a suspension from international football activities over government interference.
The new CS has in the past served as the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in 2013.
Prior to his appointment, Namwamba gave his view on the ban by FIFA.
On September 26, Namwamba noted that the world football governing body should be engaged in order to resolve the matter.
"Harambee Stars stand banned by FIFA from international football since Feb 25, 2022. They are missing out on Afcon 2023 qualifiers among other competitions.
"FIFA should be robustly engaged to resolve the impasse even as this ban period is smartly used to reinvigorate local football," his tweet read.
Namwamba had been linked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following his trips with the President to the USA. He also served as the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the same ministry under ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta.
While in the Sports Ministry in 2013, Namwamba enacted the 2013 Sports Act.
The Sports Act by Parliament provided a firm legal basis to streamline sports management and establish a framework for sports financing and responsible sports betting.
