Julen Lopetegui was relieved of his duties as Sevilla Football Club manager after losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League group stage match.

Lopetegui was in his fourth season as a manager of the Spanish club and has failed to impress in the ongoing 2022/2023 campaign.

The Spanish manager ranks fifth among coaches who have led Sevilla in the most official matches behind Joaquín Caparrós, Unai Emery, Manolo Cardo and Ramón Encinas.

“Sevilla FC has relieved Julen Lopetegui of his duties as first-team coach following our clash against Borussia Dortmund,’ part of the statement read.

This season Sevilla has accumulated a total of five points from a possible 21 in the La Liga Santander.

During his time as Sevilla's Boss Lopetagui has managed the team in 170 matches: 121 (LaLiga), 15 (Copa del Rey), 16 (Europa League), 17 (Champions League) and one in the UEFA Super Cup.

In the 170 matches, the Spanish manager has seen his team win 89 games, draw 45 and lose 35. This places him as the third most successful manager behind Caparrós and Emery.

Lopetegui in his first season led Sevilla to a sixth UEFA Europa League title in the 2019/2020 season, making him the seventh coach to have lifted a trophy with the club.

In the 2020/2021 season, he helped Sevilla make history after they achieved their record points total in the top flight with 77 points.

Lopetagui has been offered an option of a public farewell at the club's home ground Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
