Ruth Chepngetich Out to Defend Title at Chicago Marathon

Ruth Chepngetich will defend her Chicago Marathon title in the United States on Sunday, October 9. 

Chepngetich will be facing some world-class athletes like Ruta Aga (Ethiopia), Celestine Chepchirchir (Kenya), Vivian Kiplagat (Kenya) and Haven Hailu (Ethiopia), among others. 

Chepngetich, who is the 2019 World Champion, has won six of the eight marathons in her career.

Her latest victory was in 2019 at the Dubai marathon when she smashed the course record at 2:17:18. 

Chepngetich’s main opponent in Chicago will be Ethiopian Ruti Aga, who has a Personal Best of 2:18:34. 

The Ethiopian long-distance athlete has registered a single win out of six races in her marathon career. 

Another name to look out for in the 42km race is Kenya’s Celestine Chepchirchir, who has a Personal best of 2:20:10. 

Chepchirchir will be heading to Chicago in good form, finishing fourth in Seoul International Marathon on April 17, 2022. 

Fellow compatriot Vivian Kiplagat will also be keen to improve on her Personal Best of 2:20:18, a time she set at the Milan City Marathon in April 2022. 

Kiplagat will be returning to Chicago having finished in fifth place at the 2021 edition. 

Ethiopia’s Haven Hailu will be heading to the race with a personal best of 2:20:19, set 2021 Amsterdam Marathon.
