Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape after the Crown Prosecution Service gave a green light for the Greater Manchester Police to proceed with its case.
The 21-year-old was taken into custody in January 2022, over the alleged rape and assault of a young woman after images and videos emerged online.
"The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"All three counts relate to the same complainant,” the statement by Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, read in part.
The statement noted that specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West's complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.
Greenwood will make his first court appearance on Monday, October 17, at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court.
It was also noted that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online that could interfere with the proceedings.
Reports earlier had noted that Greenwood had been arrested over allegations of breaching his bail conditions.
The accusations levelled against the 21-year-old saw him get suspended from the first team. His sponsorship with Nike was also terminated.
