"This season’s league will again feature 12 teams, including promoted sides Catholic Monks and Mean Machine and will be played on a one-off, round-robin format.

"With the top four sides at the close of the league phase qualifying for the semi final playoffs set for Saturday 4 March 2023," read part of the statement from KRU.

The final of the tournament is slated for March 11, 2023, at a venue that is yet to be confirmed.

Kabras Sugar won the 2021/2022 edition after narrowly edging rivals Menengai Oilers 34-28 in a hotly contested final, which was held in Kakamega.

According to the fixtures released by KRU, the Western Kenya-based side will open their 2022/2023 campaign against the newly promoted Catholic Monks on Saturday, November 26.

Catholic Monks comprises players from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

University of Nairobi team, Mean Machine, which was promoted alongside Catholic Monks, will also open their campaign on that day against an experienced Menengai Oilers side. At the same time, Kenya Harlequin will square it out with KCB.

The other opening-day fixtures will see Homeboyz battle it out with Mwamba while Blak Blad entertains Nakuru. Varsity sides Masinde Muliro and Strathmore Leos will also play each other on that day.

While making the announcement, KRU also revealed that the Eric Shirley Shield Cup, which has not been held for three years now, will return this year.

The Eric Shirley Shield Cup was disrupted by the pandemic during the 2019/2022 season.
