Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo disclosed on Sunday, November 13, 2022 that  former team mate Wayne Rooney is jealous of him because he is still playing at a higher level.

In an interview with media personality Piers Morgan, Ronaldo stated that Rooney is not happy about his success.

“I don’t know why he criticizes me so badly. Probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a higher level.

“I’m not going to say that I am looking better than him. Which is true,” he explained.

Rooney and Ronaldo played together at Old Trafford between 2004 and 2009 before the latter left the club for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Rooney on the other hand left Manchester United in 2017 and went on to play for a number of clubs including Derby County and Everton before hanging his boots in 2021, aged 35.

The former United skipper ventured into the coaching role and he is currently the head coach of United States-based side DC United.

Cristiano further added that he feels the Red Devils have betrayed him.

“Yes, not only the coach, but also two or three guys around the club. That I felt betrayed. I don't care, people should listen to the truth.

“I felt betrayed and I felt that some people don't want me here, not only this year, but last year too,” he stated.

The 37-year-old also divulged that the club which sits fifth in the English Premier League (EPL) table has not made any progress since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

“I don't know what is going on, but since Sir Alex Ferguson left, I felt that progress was zero. For example, after sacking Ole, they bring club director Ralf Rangnick and this guy is not even a coach.

“A bigger club like Manchester United brings a sports director, which surprises not only me but all the world. Nothing changed, surprisingly not only the pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym.

“Even some point the technology, the kitchen, the chefs which I appreciate, lovely persons.

"It surprises me a lot, I thought I would see different things, as I have said different technology, infrastructure but unfortunately, we see many things that I used to see when I was 20, 21, 23, so It surprises me alot,” ended Ronaldo.

Manchester United issued a statement regarding Cristiano's revelations on Monday evening, stating that they will provide a response after establishing the facts.

"Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.

"Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans," the club stated.
